Apparent paradoxes in classical electrodynamics: a fluid medium in an electromagnetic field

In this paper we analyse a number of teaching paradoxes of classical electrodynamics, dealing with the relativistic transformation of energy and momentum for a fluid medium in an external electromagnetic field. In particular, we consider a moving parallel plate charged capacitor, where the electric attraction of its plates is balanced by the pressure of gas convicted between the plates.

To Foundations of Classical Electrodynamics Moscow 1997

In the present work a number of questions concerning foundations of the classical electrodynamics is discussed. First of all they are the law of the energy conservation and the introduction of particles in the classical electrodynamics. We pay attention to a logic error which takes place at an interpretation of the Poynting's theorem following from the equations of Maxwell-Lorentz as the law of...

The Energy Conservation Law in Classical Electrodynamics

A logical error in the usual derivation of the energy conservation law is analyzed, and a way to avoid the error is presented. In earlier papers [1], [2] we identified a logical error adopted by repetition in textbooks on classical electrodynamics when the laws of conservation of energy and momentum are derived for a system consisting of electromagnetic fields and charged particles. In this pap...

Trouble with the Lorentz law of force: incompatibility with special relativity and momentum conservation.

The Lorentz law of force is the fifth pillar of classical electrodynamics, the other four being Maxwell's macroscopic equations. The Lorentz law is the universal expression of the force exerted by electromagnetic fields on a volume containing a distribution of electrical charges and currents. If electric and magnetic dipoles also happen to be present in a material medium, they are traditionally...

Angular Momentum and Conservation Laws in Classical Electrodynamics

In analogy with mechanics the concepts of field momentum and field angular momentum can be introduced in electrodynamics through conservation laws. In this thesis some fundamental properties of the electromagnetic field angular momentum are treated. This includes the connection to sources, conservation laws and the separation of total angular momentum into a spin and an orbital part. In 1957 Ze...
